Every day we hear about some new amazing features and things our smartphones can do that we often forget that they were primarily created to make phone calls on the go. Sure, messaging and texting might be a preferred way of communication for most people, but there are still plenty of us that make phone calls and leave voice messages.

The usage of voicemail has undoubtedly declined in recent years still, it is an important feature to have enabled on your iPhone. Setting up voicemail on iPhone will allow you to see all your voicemails in one place without the need to call up a number first. This type of voicemail is called visual voicemails on iPhone.

It will list all your voicemails where you can choose the ones you want to listen to right away and the ones you want to leave for later. Further, you can choose to delete or share your voicemails. Depending on your location, iPhone model or iOS version, you might also be able to read transcripts of your voicemail by using the voicemail-to-text feature.

When you are switching from one iPhone to another, your voicemail setup and settings can transfer as well. But what if you don’t want to restore your previous backup, you are switching carriers or simply had an interruption with your voicemail? These are just some of the scenarios you might need to go through the voicemail set up on your iPhone all over again.

This guide should work on most modern iPhones all the way to the newest iPhone 11 models. With that said, you should make sure that you are running the latest version of the iOS — do this: Settings > General > Software Update. If the update is not present, then you are using the latest version which is currently iOS 13.

Almost every major phone service provider in North America supports visual voicemails. Apple provides a list of carriers that are supported if you want to check, but in most cases, you will be covered.

How to Set Up Voicemail on iPhone

Setting up voicemail on iPhone is a fairly easy process requiring just a few taps. Follow along.

Step 1:

Open the “Phone” app on your iPhone.

Step 2:

Tap on the “Voicemail” icon at the bottom right of your screen.

Step 3:

Once you are on the Voicemail page you will see that it is empty with the “Set up now” button in the middle of the page. Tap “Set up now”.

If the Voicemail page is completely blank, it means that you have already set up the voicemail on your iPhone. If there is a “Call Voicemail” button, it means that your carrier only supports traditional voicemail.

Step 4:

Apple will now ask you to create a voicemail password. When finished, tap “Done”.

Step 5:

Enter the password one more time to confirm it, then tap “Done”

Step 6:
